#WeAreOSDWednesday – Robert Marshall – OSD Southeast

Region: Southeast
ChapterWashington DC
OSD Affiliation: Chapter Leader
OSD Member Since: 2015

Why did you join OSD? “I joined OSD because I was inspired by their commitment to being a support system for Veterans. Being a Veteran myself, I know how difficult it is to traverse civilian life without having a support group who understands the challenges you face. I really wanted to help other Veterans going through the same process. OSD Supply Drops also really inspired me. Having served in Iraq with little family support, I know how getting something in the mail will lift your morale.

What has been your favorite event with OSD?  “My favorite event was supplying Veterans On The Rise with personal care supplies. What I loved about it was helping Veterans who have experienced homelessness, but also how OSD came together to make it happen. It really highlighted what a powerful community OSD is.”

How do you personally serve your community through OSD?  “I personally serve my community through OSD by helping Veterans bridge that gap to civilian life when transitioning out of the military. Also, I like putting organizations and people together. For example, with the event with Veterans On The Rise, they are a DC local charity helping Veterans who face homelessness. I found out about this organization through a chance meeting at an event with friends. From there, when the opportunity presented itself, I linked the organization to OSD. This is at the core of how I personally serve my community, I link people and groups together to make an impact on those who need it the most.”

What inspires you? “Creating a better support community for Veterans and civilians.”

What is your favorite book?  “The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien.”

How has OSD impacted you and your family’s life?  “OSD has impacted my life by giving me purpose and a sense of community with fellow Veterans. When I transitioned I was lost because I didn’t have that support structure that the Army afforded me. Joining OSD gave me a support system with people who understand me. It also has given me a greater sense of purpose with my community. Regarding my family, it has provided a therapeutic way to connect with my peers and community thus being there mentally, physically, and emotionally for my family. “

What would you say to someone considering joining OSD?  “I would say that there isn’t a better organization and a better mission to be a part of. The leaders, professionalism, work, and events are unmatched.”
