#WeAreOSDWednesday – Christian Howard – OSD Seattle

Region: Northwest
Chapter: Seattle
OSD Affiliation: Member/Volunteer
OSD Member Since: February 2015

Why did you join OSD?
“I stumbled across it online and sent a message just trying to connect, and to my surprise, I received an email back from the founder and CEO (at the time). That spoke volumes to me about what OSD was all about. And once I got connected with Chance McPheron and the Seattle Team, I knew it was something that I wanted to help out with.”

What has been your favorite event with OSD?
“Penny Arcade Expo 2016 was my most memorable event. I got to meet Stefan Frei, the Seattle Sounders goalkeeper while also helping a disabled veteran and his family enjoy the event despite his social anxiety. It was great meeting a personal sports hero and talking to him about OSD, but more importantly this disabled vet got to enjoy the expo and make lifelong memories with his wife and kids.”

How do you personally serve your community through OSD?
“Currently I serve as sort of an active duty liaison. In that role, I mostly talk to transitioning service members about OSD and the Heroic Forces initiative, and then I put them in contact with Chance. I also try to help out the team with anything that we are doing in whatever way I can.”

What inspires you?
“My daughter is my inspiration. Everything that I do is to try to provide a good life and set a good example for her.”

What is your favorite book? Why?

“Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. I have read the book twice and listened to the audiobook no less than 8 times. I love technology and I love (and lived) all of the pop culture references in the book.”

How has OSD impacted you and your family’s life?
“OSD has been great for me personally. I have met some great people, I have done so many things that I never thought I would ever get a chance to do thanks to my work with OSD. Since I am currently 2 months away from retiring from the Air Force, I am taking a lot of the lessons learned from Chance and Heroic Forces as well as some of the networking that I have done while volunteering with OSD. Hopefully, it will turn into my next great career.”

What would you say to someone considering joining OSD?
“Do it! If you are considering it, just do it. Get out of your comfort zone, meet some new people, and serve your community. Everyone in OSD from the top to the bottom is very welcoming and accepting. ”
