Super Fun for Veterans at SuperCon in Miami

Team members from Operation Supply Drop’s Miami Team (OSD Miami) were in powerful company earlier this summer. The team was on hand to spread the word about OSD’s veteran service programs and mission at the Florida Supercon at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

The convention is always a massive event with thousands of cosplayers, sci-fi aficionados, celebrity seekers, and of course superhero fans in attendance. They’ve all made the trip to marvel at all of the events and experiences that are offered. Hundreds of vendor and exhibitor booths called to attendees, but OSD’s booth stood out with big banners, camouflage netting and their best asset – the lively team from Operation Supply Drop Miami.

For OSD Miami’s civilian co-leader, Ashley Bates, the convention had a much different feel this year than in years past when she was one of the spectators. “It was interesting to see everyone setting up shop. Normally you’d walk in and everything would be ready for the public. We also wanted to focus on making connections with other people in the community, so there was a lot of talking and networking that doesn’t happen as just an attendee.”

Not only did the team talk to people who approached the Operation Supply Drop booth, but they even networked with other booths to speak about partnering, both locally and nationally, to impact our veterans. Bates says that the reception was great. “The majority of people loved the idea of us sending troops games. We had Veterans either wishing they had something like that or a few that thanked us because they actually received a supply drop.”

Of course it wasn’t all work at the convention. “Half the team caved and bought lightsabers,” Bates admits. “A bunch of us play fighting in the corner was amusing.” There were other highlights as well, including one team member, Miguel, who was participating in his first convention. “He was super excited, like a kid on Christmas,” Bates recalls. “There is a picture of him stealing MJ from Spiderman.”

This was the first convention for the OSD Miami team, but don’t worry. They will be back. They left things open for a sequel, of course.
