OSD Northern Florida Assists Gainesville Fisher House Families with Gifts and Christmas Decorations
GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA December 21, 2017 /For immediate release/ — OSD’s Northern Florida chapter joined regional partners at the Gainesville Fisher House for multiple events during December.
The house was decorated with strings of Christmas lights, stockings, poinsettia plants, and a total of six Christmas trees. Many of the ornaments were homemade by volunteers, and represented all branches of the military. Volunteers really went above and beyond to make the families staying at the Fisher House feel comfortable.
Bringing holiday cheer this time for year is important as families are far from home, and their loved one is receiving treatment at the medical center nearby.
OSD brought 15 gift bags full of snacks, games, tea, and Starbucks coffee for the families staying at the Fisher House during the month of December including an SNES Classic that the younger family members can enjoy while staying there.
Patti Fabiani, Executive Director for Gainesville Fisher House Foundation, said, “The VA will only provide certain things at the Fisher House, and only if those things are for a veteran. Some of the most important items, like Christmas decorations, have to be purchased with money that is donated. The same applies to any holiday gifts and video games for the families staying at the Fisher House. We appreciate that OSD is able to provide the comforts needed for the families at our Fisher House.”
OSD Northern Florida Team Leader, Tatum Rhodes said, “Small comforts are important for families staying at the Fisher House. Outside of that, knowing that there are people thinking of them during times when they may feel very vulnerable or unhappy, is very significant to them. For the most part, these families have to pay for many things out of pocket since it is not covered by the VA/Fisher House, including food and entertainment. There is a significant need for these sorts of things, and we meet that need.”
