KILLEEN, TEXAS (November 28, 2018) /For immediate release/ — Over Veterans Day Weekend, OSD Fort Hood helped to place 6,000 flags at the gravesites of Veterans buried at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
US Army Veteran and OSD Fort Hood Chapter Leader Justin Caple understands the significance of events like these. He explained, “As a veteran who will one day have a permanent residence here at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, it was important for me to participate in this event for a few reasons. First, I know two folks buried here. One is a Marine who passed away due to an injury sustained on patrol in Iraq. The other, is an 18-year old who passed away of cancer during his senior year. He was ready to enlist in the Marine Corps. If nothing else, it is important to let them know they are never forgotten.”
The event brought together hundreds of volunteers from a number of community organizations. From Boy Scouts to active duty service men and women, they helped to ensure these Veterans’ service and sacrifice is not forgotten.
Justin continued, “The second reason I feel it is important to participate in this event was to teach my son about respect for all those who choose to serve and potentially sacrifice their lives in service for us. We looked at all the graves, placed flags and watched as some family members both grieved and celebrated their veteran at the site. I showed him that no matter what, one day we will all pass away. Some folks will be remembered and others will not. For these 6,000 plus Veterans, as long as folks continue to volunteer for occasions like these, they will never be forgotten, even well after their blood family is gone.
