Companies are defined by products, people, and purpose. Typically, it is the product that comes to mind first. When we think of a company, we think first of what they make, provide, or create for the consumer. On occasion, we may consider the people that make up that company. For example, when there is an issue with a product and customer service is contacted, we likely consider the attitude and helpfulness of that employee. But how often do we consider purpose? What would it look like if companies and consumers thought more about purpose?
David Franklin, founder and CEO of Cloud Co-Op, is doing just that. For the last 3 years, Cloud Co-Op has taken part in the Pledge 1%, a global movement to create a new normal in which giving back is integrated into the DNA of companies of all sizes. With Pledge 1%, companies pledge any combination of product, equity, profit or time. The pledge is used as a way to set intent and align values. For example, through their pledge, Cloud Co-Op is committed to giving back to a number of nonprofits, including OSD. Additionally, they empower employees to support a cause that is important to them by providing paid time off to volunteer.
David puts it like this, “In today’s market, it’s the company that learns to focus on purpose that will create a culture that people desire to be in and consumers want to buy from. When employees feel connected they perform and when consumers feel connect they purchase. The focus on purpose is a business strategy that stems from the values of its leadership outward and makes everyone better. Learning to give back, not only helps the recipient but generally helps the giver more.”
