“Battle Brothers Shaving is a company for warriors by warriors.  It was born out of brotherhood, service and self-sacrifice,” says Andrew Weiss, Battle Brothers Operations Director. An Army veteran, Weiss was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He served as a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crew chief for medical evacuation.  “Our mission was to provide medical assistance, support and evacuation to anyone in need — military, civilian, animals, and enemy alike.”

Life in a small forward operating base presents many challenges. “Month after month we ate, slept, laughed and fought together,” Weiss recalls.  “As the missions went on, our bonds strengthened and a brotherhood was formed. Amidst the chaos of life on deployment, we found simple things to take joy in, like shaving!” For Weiss, the simple, everyday act of shaving turned into a hobby and then became a mission: to find the perfect shave. “Our team had all sorts of razors, blades, brushes, soaps and techniques to test, try, and compare.  We realized that, in addition to the importance of using high quality products, each person needed a slightly different technique to achieve his own best shave.” Weiss describes the shaving conversations as “a little time of luxury that turned into a group hobby and inspired my quest to find the best shaving experience for each individual’s needs.”

In 2013 Weiss was deployed to Afghanistan, again doing medivac missions, this time during the ongoing troop withdrawal.  “They wanted to leave a smaller footprint so our regular supplies stopped, and for eight to nine weeks we only got food and water dropped by parachutes,” says Weiss.  “We had to use old razors, which were chewing up our faces. I thought, wouldn’t it be great to someday send high quality shaving equipment to troops who are deployed?”  Battle Brothers is working on a plan to make this possible.

“Once I got back from Iraq I went back to school at a local university to pursue a degree in entrepreneurship,” says Weiss.  It was during his senior year that he was deployed to Afghanistan. “I continued my quest for the ultimate shaving experience and managed to get 60-70 guys to buy their own shaving equipment, so we could do some comparisons.” After this deployment, Weiss went on to complete his degree.

Weiss realized that no one was target marketing shaving products to service members.  “It took about two years to find a manufacturer and build an international logistics train.  With the help of a lot of really smart people we were able to build the brand and launch in September of 2017.”  Although still considered to be a startup, business is picking up.

Battle Brothers strives for attention to detail and uncompromising quality.  Says Weiss, “Our products are designed to invite you into the luxury of customizing your shaving experience.  Our razors are designed for easy maintenance. All of our brushes are handmade and our razor blades are manufactured with high grade stainless steel.”

Battle Brothers Shaving has partnered with a variety of veteran-owned companies and organizations which help veterans, including ALPHA GRX, Combat Flip Flops, GovX, Opps4Vets, Suit Soldier, The Patriot Trading Company, and  Polestar Coffee.  Battle Brothers Shaving Co. is a certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business under the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization.  The Veteran-Owned Business Project is a comprehensive, user-friendly member network directory of businesses owned by veterans, service-disabled veterans, active duty military, reservists, and military spouses.

“As a professional, you want to look and feel your best, while performing your best,” says Weiss “You should also expect nothing but the finest performance in the tools that you use. Start the day in confidence, with a shave of equal quality.”

“Our double edged razor is awesome,” he adds.   “And in February we anticipate offering new three- and five-blade razors.  We are developing our own product line, which easily compares in quality to Gillette.”  Also in the works are Battle Sisters products for women “These products will be for women who are go-getters and want a mature, professional look,” says Weiss.  “We are currently undergoing review and testing.”

“In the past few months I’ve sort of became the new kid on the block in the veteran-owned company community,” says Weiss.  “We’re getting attention, a lot of emails. I connected with Combat Flip Flops CEO Matthew Griffin and saw a TED talk that he gave.  He’s been helpful, along with other veteran business owners.  That’s how I connected with Glenn Banton. I love what OSD is doing.  I hope Battle Brothers and OSD continue to work together. I think a lot about how can I give back — make great product and send ‘em free stuff.  I’m excited to provide quality products to veterans, and I hope people will love the product as much as I do.”

The Battle Brothers motto is: Keep your friends close, and your shave closer.
