812th Military Police Soldiers from Orangeburg, New York Seed New MWR Center at Gitmo with Support from OSD
ORANGEBURG, NEW YORK & FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA (March 7, 2018) /For immediate release/ — US Army soldiers working detainee operation in Gitmo, Cuba have a high stress environment often unknown to the support community back home.
SGT Christine R. said, “Working in a detainee operations capacity often times comes with many psychological effects that go unnoticed. Although we are not in combat theater, we are held to a higher standard in which we must conduct ourselves as guard force members given the complexity and political affiliations of Gitmo.”
“As members of the 812th, my Unit is currently serving in a detainee operations capacity. All platoons have been divided to achieve very critical pieces of this mission, in which we work simultaneously together. “
SSG John G. added, “There is a lot of free time over here and I want to keep my soldiers out of trouble, so I volunteered to start a MWR in our living area.”
Recognizing the need to ensure high morale and provide activities during down time, OSD shipped multiple “Supply Drops” to these soldiers in Cuba.
OSD Director of Global Community Operations, Scott Morrison, stated, “These soldiers have a tough job in today’s political climate which adds a level of stress and complexity within their mission. The support OSD provides ensures that these men and women know they’re appreciated and gives some activities to bond over during down time.”
OSD’s “Supply Drop” program has impacted hundreds of thousands of active military personnel in scores of locations around the globe.
